Essential Non-Fiction

Where non-fiction gets great: The best non-fiction reads like a novel. Start with Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City or Michael Lewis's The Big Short — both are as propulsive as any thriller.

For science writing: Richard Feynman's Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman! remains the gold standard. For modern science writing, Carlo Rovelli's Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and Robert Sapolsky's work.

For history: Antony Beevor, Simon Schama, and Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens are essential — though Harari's later work is more contested. Mary Beard on Rome is outstanding.

For psychology and behaviour: Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow is the most important popular psychology book of the last decade. Robert Cialdini's Influence is a close second.
